These two maps depict the century-long evolution of the Sawry District neighborhood, showcasing its transformation from 1920 to 2020.
Overall, the neighborhood has flourished over time. By 2020, there are abundance of businesses, housing options, and public services. Notably, some businesses and services from 1920 are no longer present.
To begin with, the most significant changes and growth were observed in the business and housing sectors. The cannery present in 1920 was replaced by an office complex. Two houses near the Elmwood River were demolished to make way for a road and an apartment complex. The number of establishments along Oak Avenue increased from two houses and a shop to three houses, two shops, an apartment complex, and a petrol station.
In contrast, the changes in public services were less substantial. Prestwich Primary School was demolished and then rebuilt, resulting in a larger school closer to the shops on Oak Street. A bridge was built on Elmwood River with a bike path along its course, which replaced the small beach earlier present in 1920.
